I don’t think I’ll EVER stop being blown away by the brilliant subtleties of Disney animation… Look at this…. we start from a slight angle, just behind Belle’s head, with both characters making eye contact with each other. Belle moves in, putting a hand on The Prince’s back to pull him closer, while also directing his head motion with the other hand. They rotate in space while all this happens, so we get a nice profile view of the actual kiss. A beat after she pulls him in, he cups that back of her head gently —a cute contrast to fact that she has smushed his cheeks— and shifts her position, mid-kiss. It’s quick, and classy and happy, and when they shift away, slowly, maintaining eye contact, Belle drops down (because the animator realized she would have to be on tiptoe for this shot —brilliant brilliant) and the we rotate again to just behind The Prince’s head… And you never notice that this shot has actually shifted 180 degrees. It’s subtle, joyful and so well executed that you never think to remark on any of it. Seriously, Disney. I don’t even. I can’t..wow

It was plain to see that my old pet needed someone. But if it were left up to Roger, we’d be bachelors forever. He was married to his work, writing songs. Songs about romance… of all things, something he knew absolutely nothing about. Oh, he’s intelligent enough, as humans go. Well, now, isn’t this a flashback.

I went to a panel at this past Anime Boston called “Totally Subversive Toons”, which talked about all the “controversial adult stuff” that was put into western animation and anime that managed to get past the Censors. This was one of the clips that was shown at the panel. Maybe I was a little tired at that point, but the clip really didn’t hit me until halfway.

In the case of this clip, however, it got past the Censors in Australia, but not in the U.S. Interesting…
